Institute of Food Economics and Consumption Studies

The Institute of Food Economics and Consumption Studies is part of the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences at Kiel University. It is one of the institutes for the discipline Nutrition and Household Science. The institute includes the Department of Food Economics (Prof. Dr. Awudu Abdulai) as well as the Department of Household and Consumer Oriented Health Economics (Prof. Dr. Martin Schellhorn).

The teaching and research activities at the Department of Food Economics concentrate on supply-oriented problems of food markets, which involves economic problems of the food economy as well as the consequences of technological development. Furthermore, the focus is on the food security issues on a global scale and questions of efficient and effective actions to overcome hunger and poverty.

The teaching and research activities at the Department of Household and Consumer Oriented Health Economics cover demand-oriented problems of the food- and non-food-sector, including the analysis of consumer behavior concerning health related consumer protection. The economic and social situation of private households plays a key role as a determining factor of household demand and welfare. Additionally, special attention is paid to food safety aspects. This leads into problems of consumer, health and social policy which are strongly interrelated.
